Minor league stadium doubling as Airbnb location, entertainment hub

Sporting News — (Tom Gatto)

A minor league team is cashing in on the idea that the clubhouse is like a second home.

The Pensacola (Fla.) Blue Wahoos, the Twins' Double-A affiliate (Southern League), are listing their place, Blue Wahoos Stadium, on Airbnb for a cool $1,500 a night, plus fees, for up to 10 guests. Food/drink packages, merchandise and "additional experiences" are extra.

The club's ad says the rental is "the most intimate, behind-the-scenes ballpark experience in history."

Availability is wide-open because the regular occupants won't be returning for a while. There is a fear within professional baseball that the 2020 minor league season will be canceled by the coronavirus.

With no games comes no revenue, so Blue Wahoos staff have hit on this and other ways to bring in cash while they're unable to fully do their day (night) jobs. There was a youth baseball tournament and a movie/fireworks night on Saturday alone ("Frozen II" was the movie choice). Other events include weekend disc golf (PGA star Bubba Watson is a part-owner of the team), happy hour, trivia night and limited food service.

But giving people the run of the place will draw the most attention and a good bit of money. The Blue Wahoos' house is your house.
