NASCAR gives retiring Clint Bowyer a feel-good home track tribute at KansasSporting News — (Dan Bernstein)
NASCAR honored retiring driver Clint Bowyer at his home Kansas Speedway venue on Sunday, letting him soak up fan support and run a pre-race lap behind the pace car.
A group of spectators laid down in a No. 14 formation in a nod to Bowyer's car.
Bowyer, who announced he would transition to the TV booth in 2021, used the moment to make fun of himself.
"They have to let me lead and complete this whole lap, (spotter) Brett," said Bowyer on his radio. "Might be the only lap I lead around this freakin' place."
There was also a "Thank you" message on a side wall for the Hollywood Casino 400.
Bowyer was born in Emporia, Kan.
He was eliminated from playoff contention last weekend.
